Excellent, and very timely article. Easy to follow too. To save money this year I’m doing my taxes on my own so this was really helpful information. Thanks!

  2. Thanks so much for posting this! This came at the right time too.
Last year when my husband and I paid for our taxes at one of those lovely chain tax preparer offices, it cost close to $400! That drives me crazy because I do all of the math myself, lol, they don’t even have to add up any receipts! I do all of that, spend 12 hours each year, and take in a slip of paper, and read the numbers off for them.
Then I see people with boxes of papers all crumbled up and they sit there for countless hours, preparing their taxes and these people pay the same as me.
I wish I would have found this article a few years ago. But like our tax guy always tells us, ” You can deduct the cost of filing off of next years taxes!”

The first paragraph of your article would definitely describe me – the whole world of taxes is so scary to me. I’d love to do them myself, online, but I did not get up the nerve yet! I am so scared that I will make some huge mistake – I am not good with numbers… maybe if I read enough articles like yours, here, I will get brave enough to try!

Thanks for your comment Ruth. It’s not that difficult at all, really. If you gather your tax information for an accountant, then you’re half way there. The online tax program will ask simple interview type questions and your answer will determine the type of return to file. You don’t have to make that choice either, the program will ask you to complete the various forms based on your interview, and it will automatically complete all of the required forms for you. You only need to review the return and press one button, and all returns are filed with the IRS and any states that you need. The e-filing is Free, and refunds can be deposited directly into your bank account in about 8 days. You can try it for free as well.

I went through a site was supposed to be free but in the end charged me for sending the return. Free was just supposed be if I wanted to print them out I guess. And they are running big TV ads

A lot of people fear that doing their taxes themselves will be difficult. I have done mine for the last five years following an online tax software similar to yours. It’s easy to do because you are basically just answering questions about your finances. The thing that I realized, and what made me decide to do them on my own, was that at H and R Block the tax advisers are pretty much doing the same thing. Their screen asks them questions in which then they ask you. if this is all they are doing, then why not do it yourself?

We filed our taxes for free one year and it wasn’t hard. Now we use Turbo Tax every year. I’ve come across people like you’ve talked about, that are just too intimidated by the whole process, but I prefer to save the money and do it with program. The software has helped us get lots of money back in the past. Thanks for the great info!

Such a simple process that many I’m sure, are quite nervous of. You give a rounded view with a very clear message that this is easy and can be achieved. It should instill confidence in anyone to go and do this themselves.

free is good! And I have no doubt that the service is quality as well. Beats paying someone. We’ve been paying someone $300 for last few years.

This is a great guide for your average taxpayer, however for some of us with a complicated situation (we run two small businesses), it’s well worth the money to hire the pros and have peace of mind.

That’s great advice, thank you. I’d actually heard of your company before, so it was no surprise to find all this great information available for free on this site here. Thank you very much for posting some great info on your site, much appreciated! Better get onto my tax returns now 🙂

I used to file my taxes with the EZ form but I always had to have dad with me because I just could not grasp what I was supposed to do in order to get it done, no matter how many times we had done it over the years. When I moved in with my boyfriend, my parents were a 3 hour drive away so I had to use another alternative. I haven’t gone to a tax accountant but I used TurboTax. It cost me about $30 so that wasn’t too bad.

  12. Avatar Mike Adams says:

I should give this a try next year. I always pay so much to have mine done and, at the time, it doesn’t seem like a big deal because you are getting so much back anyway, but it certainly does add up over the long term.
