How Can Our Personal Information Get Stolen?

How often do you receive those offers in the mail for credit cards and other services where you are asked for very personal financial information? Sometimes we complete one and mail back a confidential application without any thought of possible identity theft. Even in the US mail system, some of these are lost or even intercepted and then the nightmare begins. The obvious question to ask now is LifeLock worth it? Well, this is where they stand out. As soon as some thief applies for credit, you are immediately alerted to nip it in the bud. How many of you use the services of LifeLock for ID protection?

Have you ever received e-mails from your bank with a link to the bank’s website where you are asked to perhaps verify certain information, or even to apply for a credit card? Many of these are fake websites made to look exactly like the one from your bank. Instead, they are gathering all information from you to steal your identity. In other cases, a program may secretly be downloaded on your computer and used to grab any identifying information plus passwords to secure websites.

What Happens With the Stolen Information?

Once a thief has your information, they can often use it to open credit cards, borrow money in your name or they can gain access to your bank accounts. They can also use the information to create a new driver’s license or state ID card.

This could mean that if the thief got in trouble, they would use the information stolen from you to avoid having something on their record. The thief can run up large credit card bills, empty a bank account, or create other unpleasant issues for you. Quite frequently, this could also involve selling your stolen personal information internationally.

How Can a Person Stay Safe?

Most of the time, an individual can simply remain safe by using safe practices. All too often, too many requests are made for our social security number. Unless there is a strong legal reason for someone to have it, do not give it out.

If you must mail sensitive information, use a mailing service that requires a signature to prove it did arrive. Avoid using personal information online and be sure to use a virus scan program often to ensure no programs are downloaded onto your computer.

A Personal Testimony

[bctt tweet=”A personal testimony to say that LifeLock works!” username=”HBSMoneyTips”]I’ve been a LifeLock member for a while now.  About a month ago, I received a call from LifeLock asking if I had applied for a credit card at a bank in Florida. I quickly said no, and asked why. I was told that someone had applied for a credit card using my credit information, and that a credit bureau inquiry had just come through.

The lady from LifeLock asked me to hold while she called the bank in Florida. About a minute later, we were all on the call. The Florida bank asked me a few questions, and after she was satisfied that I was who I said I was, she said that the application would be denied, and that she would contact the various credit bureaus to cancel the inquiry. About a week later, I received a letter from the bank confirming everything. LifeLock WORKS!
